A DC plug (also called a DC power plug ) is a commonly used low-voltage power supply for electronic devices such as LED lighting, laptops, routers, and CCTV cameras . DC stands for Direct Current .
Features of a DC plug
- Cylindrical shape : Consists of a hollow outer sleeve (negative) and a central pin (positive).
- Different sizes : The most common sizes are 5.5mm x 2.1mm and 5.5mm x 2.5mm .
- Polarity : Usually the inside is (+) and the outside (-) , but it is important to always check this.
- Low Voltage Use : Typically suitable for 5V, 9V, 12V, 24V or 48V depending on the application.
Common DC plug sizes
DC plugs are indicated by their outer and inner dimensions in millimeters (outer diameter x inner diameter):
-
5.5mm x 2.1mm (most common)
- Widely used for LED strips, cameras and routers .
- Compatible with many standard 12V and 24V power supplies .
-
5.5mm x 2.5mm
- Similar to the 2.1mm version, but with a slightly larger inner pin.
- Commonly found in laptops and high-power LED drivers .
-
3.5mm x 1.35mm
- Small size, used for 5V power supplies (e.g. Arduino boards).
-
4.0mm x 1.7mm
- Commonly used in portable electronics and some LED lights .
-
2.5mm x 0.7mm
- Compact DC connector, often found in mini LED lights and small power supplies .
Using DC plugs in LED lighting
- LED strips and LED drivers (e.g. 12V or 24V systems).
- LED panel lighting with external adapters.
- Smart LED lighting with controllers and dimmers.
- Waterproof versions (with screw connection) for outdoor use.
Important points to consider when using DC plugs
- Check the polarity! Some devices have reversed polarity, which can cause damage.
- Power (Wattage) : Check if the plug and adapter can supply sufficient Ampere (A) for the LED lighting.
- Connector Size : Make sure the inner and outer diameter of the connector match your LED driver or power supply.
If you want to use a DC plug for a specific LED application, it's helpful to know the required voltage and current.
