Energy label (new)

The new energy label for household appliances and lighting was introduced in the EU on March 1, 2021. It replaces the old A+++, A++, A+ scale and makes energy efficiency clearer and future-proof .

Main Changes

New scale: A to G

  • The old A+++, A++, A+ classes have been replaced by a simpler AG scale .
  • Class A is now reserved for the most efficient appliances.
  • Most products that were previously A+++ now fall into B, C or lower (to allow for future, more energy-efficient appliances).

QR code for additional information

  • Each new energy label contains a QR code that leads to the EU database (EPREL) with extensive product details.

New icons

  • Energy consumption is indicated more clearly, for example in kWh per 100 washes (for washing machines) or per 1000 operating hours (for lighting).
  • Additional information such as noise level , capacity , water consumption , etc. is now standardized.

Which products does the new energy label apply to?

From March 1, 2021 : ✔ Refrigerators and freezers
Dishwashers
Washing machines and washer-dryers
Televisions and screens

From September 1, 2021 : ✔ Lamps and light sources (such as LED lighting)

Later to follow: 🚧 Heating and air conditioning (expected in 2026)

Example of the new energy label

🔹 Energy class : A to G (no longer A+)
🔹 Annual energy consumption in kWh
🔹 Additional information per product category , such as:

  • Washing machines: capacity in kg , noise level , water consumption
  • Refrigerators: capacity in liters , noise level
  • Televisions: Size in inches and resolution

Why has the energy label changed?

Clearer and fairer – Consumers better understand which product is truly energy-efficient.
Room for innovation – There is no A-class product yet, so manufacturers can develop more energy-efficient models.
Better comparison – Devices from different brands can be compared more easily.
