European standard EN 12464-1

EN 12464-1 is a European standard that specifies lighting requirements for workplaces inside buildings . The aim of this standard is to ensure a safe, comfortable, and efficient working environment by providing guidelines for illuminance, uniformity, glare, and color rendering .

Key aspects of EN 12464-1

This standard specifies minimum lighting levels for different types of workplaces and activities, such as offices, hospitals, schools, industrial environments and shops.

1. Light intensity (lux values)

The standard specifies the minimum amount of illuminance (expressed in lux ) required for various tasks. Some examples:

  • Office work (writing, reading, data entry): Minimum 500 lux
  • Meeting rooms: Minimum 300 lux
  • Corridors and stairs: Minimum 100-200 lux
  • Industrial workshops (precision work): Minimum 750-1000 lux

2. Evenness of illumination

  • The lighting should be evenly distributed so that no large contrast differences or dark areas arise.

3. Glare (UGR – Unified Glare Rating)

  • The maximum glare value (UGR) is determined per type of workspace.
  • Example: In offices, the UGR value should not exceed 19 to avoid fatigue and discomfort.

4. Color Rendering Index (CRI)

  • Lighting should display colors accurately . This is expressed in the CRI (Color Rendering Index).
  • For offices and schools, a minimum CRI of 80 is recommended.
  • For laboratories and retail, a higher CRI may be required ( 90+ ).

5. Color temperature and light quality

  • The choice of color temperature (warm white, neutral white, cool white) depends on the working environment.
    • Warm white (~3000K) for relaxing spaces.
    • Neutral white (~4000K) for offices and schools.
    • Cool white (>5000K) for precision work and industrial applications.

Why is EN 12464-1 important?

  • Improves productivity and well-being : Good lighting reduces eye fatigue and improves concentration.
  • Ensures safety in the workplace : Sufficient lighting prevents accidents and errors.
  • Regulatory Compliance : In many European countries, compliance with this standard is mandatory when designing and installing lighting in workplaces.

EN 12464-1 vs. EN 12464-2

  • EN 12464-1 : Focuses on indoor lighting for workplaces.
  • EN 12464-2 : Covers lighting requirements for outdoor workplaces (such as parking lots, loading zones and roads).
