Petromax lamp

A Petromax lamp is a powerful, pressure lamp powered by petroleum or kerosene, known for its bright and efficient illumination. Originally developed in Germany, the lamp is often used for outdoor activities, emergency situations, and by enthusiasts of classic lighting.

How does a Petromax lamp work?

  1. Pressure building – The lamp has a built-in pump that pumps air into the tank. This increases the pressure in the fuel tank.
  2. Preheating – The generator (gasification tube) is preheated using a small alcohol burner or a built-in preheating system.
  3. Gasification of fuel – The heated kerosene is converted into gas, which is guided through a nozzle to the glow mantle.
  4. Combustion – The gas is ignited in the mantle, which glows white hot, creating a very bright light source.

Features of a Petromax lamp

  • Durability : Made of brass or stainless steel, withstands harsh conditions.
  • Applications : Ideal for camping, expeditions, military purposes, and as emergency lighting during power outages.
  • Fuel : Runs on kerosene/petroleum, which is available worldwide.
