Schuko plug (Type F)

A Schuko plug (Type F) is a standard mains plug used for 230 V connections in Europe, including the Netherlands and Belgium. The name Schuko comes from the German "Schutzkontakt," which refers to the grounded metal contacts on the side of the plug.

Features of a Schuko plug

  • Type : F-plug according to the international standard CEE 7/4 .
  • Voltage : Works on 230V~ (alternating current).
  • Grounding : Has side contacts for earthing.
  • Maximum current : 16A at 230V (max. 3680W ).
  • Compatibility : Works with Schuko sockets and hybrid Type E/F sockets (such as in the Netherlands and Belgium).
  • Strong and robust : Suitable for heavy electrical equipment and industrial applications.

Use of Schuko plugs in lighting

Schuko plugs are usually used for LED lighting that runs directly on 230V . Examples:

  • LED construction lights with a Schuko plug.
  • LED light strings and decorative lighting with mains voltage power supply.
  • LED panels and fluorescent replacements that operate on a Schuko adapter.
  • Temporary lighting for events and construction sites.

Difference between Schuko and Euro plug (Type C)

Feature Schuko (Type F) Euro plug (Type C)
Grounding Yes, via side contacts No
Max. current 16A 2.5A
Application Heavier equipment (LED construction lights, industrial lighting) Light appliances (small LED lamps, chargers)
Compatible with Schuko and hybrid Type E/F sockets Type C, E and F sockets

Important points of interest

  • Not compatible everywhere : In some countries (such as France) Type E is used, which has a pin ground instead of side contacts.
  • Large size : Can sometimes be too large for compact power strips.
  • For indoor 230V LED applications only : Not suitable for low voltage LED systems (such as 12V or 24V).
